Ugandan Lawyers Protest Jailing of Opposition Leader

update

In Uganda, members of the Uganda Law Society have held a one-day strike to protest the recent use of troops at the High Court. Reporter Solomon Muyita, of the Kampala-based Monitor newspaper told VOA reporter Shaka Ssali that about 300 lawyers are calling for the resignation of the attorney general.

Last week, the government sent soldiers in black-T-shirts and wielding machine guns to a court where men accused of treason with opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye were appearing. The deployment has been widely condemned by lawyers, judges and the international community as an attack on the independence of the Ugandan judiciary.
