A Taiwan-based computer manufacturer has been selected to make the so-called '$100 laptop computer' intended to revolutionize education for millions of children in developing countries.
Taiwan's Quanta Computer company won the contract to further develop and build the low-cost machines. Quanta says it will devote significant resources to the project during the next six months.
Developers from the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) created the low-cost computer. It operates by hand-crank when electricity is unavailable and can access wireless networks.
The U.S.-based non-profit group One Laptop Per Child, created by MIT faculty members, aims to provide one laptop to every child in the world.
A news release from MIT says between five and 15 million laptops will be created to launch the project, and will go to children in China, India, Brazil, Argentina, Egypt, Nigeria and Thailand.
