Tanzania Electoral Commission Officially Declares Kikwete Election Winner

update

Tanzania's electoral commission has officially declared ruling party candidate Jakaya Kikwete winner of last week's presidential election.

In a brief ceremony early Tuesday, National Electoral Commission Chairman Lewis Makame declared that Mr. Kikwete had been officially elected president.

Officials say the announcement was made despite a challenge filed by an opposition candidate. A court has yet to rule on the challenge.

Official election results show Mr. Kikwete - who is Tanzania's foreign minister - had won more than 80 percent of the vote.

His nearest rival, Ibrahim Lipumba of the main opposition Civic United Front party, took 11 percent of the votes.

The victory ensures the Chama Cha Mapinduzi party will keep its 40-year hold on power in the east African nation.
