Escaped Rape Suspect Recaptured in Miami

update

Police in Miami, Florida, have recaptured a Honduran man accused of seven rapes, who escaped from jail a week ago.

Police said late Monday they had taken back into custody after they found him with the help of a tip phoned in from someone who saw him. The 34-year-old suspect was wearing street clothes and carrying a knife police believe he used to break out of jail last Tuesday, by slipping out of an air vent and down a rope made of sheets. A second inmate escaped with him, but was injured and recaptured almost immediately.

Mr. Rapalo's escape caused high anxiety in areas of Miami where some of the alleged rapes took place in 2003. Handbills with his picture were posted and a reward offered for information leading to his capture.

Television footage showed Mr. Rapalo smiling as police led him back to jail.
