Australian Stuart Appleby has a one-stroke lead midway through the Professional Golf Association season-opening Mercedes Championships tournament in Hawaii.

Two-time defending champion Appleby overcame gusting winds of 60 kilometers per hour in Friday's second round to card a 1-under-par, 72, on the scenic Kapalua Plantation course on the island of Maui. He has a 36-hole score of 3-under-par, 143.

Tied for second place at 144 are world number two Vijay Singh of Fiji, Americans Jim Furyk and David Toms, and U.S. Open champion Michael Campbell of New Zealand.

First-round leader Olin Browne of the United States and Spain's Sergio Garcia are another shot back at 1-under-par, 145.
