Bush Campaigns for His 2006 Agenda

update

President Bush is traveling to the southern U.S. state of Tennessee Wednesday to promote the initiatives he laid out in his State of the Union speech.

Mr. Bush will address a group of Republican activists in the state capital Nashville at 12:50 p.m. EST, to rally support for a broad agenda that includes health care, education and reducing American dependence on foreign oil.

He also is expected to underscore the foreign policy themes he outlined Tuesday night. In his speech, Mr. Bush warned against isolationism and vowed to continue the war against terrorism in Iraq, Afghanistan and other world trouble spots.

Addressing the full Congress, the president said U.S. efforts around the world are spurring a "new chapter in the story of self-government." He cited democratic elections in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Mr. Bush's address comes after a year in which his approval ratings have dropped sharply. Political commentators are waiting to see whether the agenda Mr. Bush laid out will reinvigorate his presidency and strengthen support for the Republican party for November's mid-term elections.
