Bosnian Court Orders Serb War Crimes Suspect Released on Technicality

update

A Bosnian court has ordered the release of a Serb war crimes suspect, whose arrest last month involved a shootout with European Union peacekeepers that killed his wife and left him seriously wounded.

The court determined that Dragomir Abazovic was arrested on an old warrant. It determined the warrant was no longer valid because Bosnia-Herzegovina's new code of criminal procedure was already in effect.

Abazovic is still in a hospital for treatment of head injuries sustained in the shootout, near Rogatica, east of Sarajevo. Hospital officials indicate he could be released Friday.

The suspect' wife, Rada Abazovic, died of her wounds at a hospital hours after the shooting. The couple's 11-year-old son also was seriously wounded.

The 6,500-strong EU force, which has been in Bosnia since 2004, is involved in the search for fugitive war crimes suspects and combating organized crime throughout Bosnia.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
