Croatia Issues Extradition Request to Australia for War Crimes Suspect

Croatia has issued a formal request to Australia to extradite a former Serb paramilitary commander wanted on charges of war crimes.

Croatia's justice ministry Thursday said the request for the extradition of Dragan Vasiljkovic is being forwarded through diplomatic channels.

An Australian court will determine if Vasiljkovic, also known as "Captain Dragan," should be sent to Croatia to face charges.

Croatian officials have accused Vasiljkovic of torturing and killing Croatian civilians and prisoners of war during fighting that broke out after Croatia declared independence from former Yugoslavia in 1991.

Vasiljkovic, who is a citizen of Australia and Serbia and Montenegro, was arrested last month in Sydney. He had been working in Perth as a golf instructor.

He denies committing war crimes.
