Gunmen Attack Convoy of Ugandan President

update

Ugandan authorities say gunmen fired at President Yoweri Museveni's motorcade during a campaign visit in the volatile northeast on Saturday.

A spokesman for the Presidential Guard Brigade says no one in the motorcade was hurt in the attack, in the state of Karamoja. He said the identify of the attackers is not known.

The region is full of illegal weapons and plagued by bandits and cattle thieves.

The spokesman says the attack was unusual because gunmen in the region normally do not target long convoys. He says the attackers used small rifles and a machine gun, which also is unusual.

President Museveni is running for re-election in the February 23 balloting.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP and Reuters.
