American golf superstar Tiger Woods survived a slow start, but advanced to the third round of the World Match Play Championship in Carlsbad, California.
Woods, the top seed, did not take the lead until the 10th hole in Thursday's second round, and had to birdie the final hole to beat Australian* Robert Allenby (one up) on the course at the La Costa Resort.
Second seed Vijay Singh of Fiji, third seed Retief Goosen of South Africa, and fifth seeded American Phil Mickelson all advanced, as did defending champion, eighth seed David Toms of the United States.
Ireland's Padraig Harrington enjoyed a big rally. He birdied the last three holes to tie Angel Cabrera, then beat the Argentine with a par on the first extra hole.
