Tennis: Federer, Hingis Advance at Pacific Life Open Tournament

World number one men's tennis player Roger Federer of Switzerland and his countrywoman Martina Hingis take the courts Wednesday at the Pacific Life Open tournament in Indian Wells, California.

Federer, the top seed and defending champion, plays a third-round match against Frenchman Richard Gasquet. The Swiss player survived a tough-match against Olivier Rochus of Belgium Tuesday (3-6, 6-2, 7-5).

Hingis is coming off Tuesday's win over second seed Lindsay Davenport of the United States (6-3, 1-6, 6-2). The Swiss player has a quarterfinal match against Dinara Safina of Russia.

Elsewhere in the men's draw, world number two Rafael Nadal of Spain plays Sebastien Grosjean of France while third seed Andy Roddick of the United States plays Igor Andreev of Russia. Russian Marat Safin plays a fourth round match against Finland's Jarkko Nieminen.

In the women's quarterfinals, Maria Sharapova of Russia plays Anna-Lena Groenefeld of Germany. The tournament is being played outdoors on hard courts at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. The men's winner receives $455,000 while the women's champion takes home $332,000.
