Senior South African Police Officer Goes on Shooting Rampage, Kills 8

Authorities in South Africa say a senior police officer has killed eight people, including four of his colleagues and a baby, during a shooting rampage near Johannesburg.

Officials say the killing spree began Monday evening when Superintendent Chippa Mateane killed three women and a baby. He then went to his police station in Kagiso township and fatally shot four of his colleagues.

Mateane continued his rampage in Sebokeng township, where he shot and seriously wounded his brother.

Police killed Mateane during a confrontation early Tuesday.

Authorities say they are still trying to learn the relationship between the shooter and the women and baby he killed, and well as his motive for the killing spree.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
