MLB: Indians Trounce White Sox

update

In major league baseball action Tuesday, the Cleveland Indians defeated the Chicago White Sox 8-2. Aaron Boone hit a home run and drove in four runs for the Indians, while pitcher Jake Westbrook allowed just six hits and struck out four batters in six-and-a-third innings.

The loss came on the day White Sox players received special rings commemorating last year's World Series championship.

Also in the American League on Tuesday, the Toronto Blue Jays downed the Minnesota Twins 6-3. The game was a duel between ace pitchers Roy Halladay of Toronto and Minnesota's Johan Santana, both recent winners of the league's Cy Young award, which honors the best pitcher in both the American and National leagues at the end of the season. Halladay struck out four batters and gave up five hits in seven and two-thirds innings.

Elsewhere in the American League, the Texas Rangers routed the Boston Red Sox 10-4; the Oakland Athletics narrowly defeated the New York Yankees 4-3; and the Seattle Mariners beat the Los Angeles Angels 10-8.

In the National League, the Florida Marlins notched a dominating 11-2 win over the Houston Astros. Josh Willingham hit two home runs for the Marlins, while teammates Mike Jacobs and Miguel Cabrera also hit homers. Houston pitcher Andy Pettitte was lifted in the middle of the fifth inning after giving up 10 runs and 13 hits.

Also in the National League, the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-5. Chris Capuano pitched six strong innings for the Brewers, giving up only five hits and striking out seven batters. And the Los Angeles Dodgers downed the Atlanta Braves 5-4, as J.D. Drew hit a two-run homer for Los Angeles.

Tuesday's contest between the San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants in San Diego was postponed due to rain.
