MLB: Reds Score Easy Win Over Cubs


The Cincinnati Reds hit six homers against the Chicago Cubs as they cruised to a 9-2 win over their National League rivals in Major League Baseball action Tuesday.

Edwin Encarnacion hit a grand slam for the Reds, while teammate Adam Dunn hit a pair of solo homers. Ken Griffey Jr., Austin Kearns and pitcher Bronson Arroyo rounded out the home run totals for Cincinnati. Arroyo held Chicago to six hits to snap the Cubs' three-game winning streak.

The New York Mets spoiled the home opener for the Washington Nationals with a 7-1 win. Rookie pitcher Brian Bannister recorded his first career win by allowing just three hits over seven innings.

Also in the National League, the San Diego Padres beat the Florida Marlins 9-3; the Pittsburgh Pirates scored a 7-6 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Colorado Rockies defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-5.

In the American League, the New York Yankees beat the Kansas City Royals 9-7 for their ninth consecutive home-opener victory. The Yankees were down 7-4 in the eighth inning when they staged a five-run comeback, capped by Derek Jeter's three-run homer.

The Boston Red Sox defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 5-3 in the home opener at Fenway Park. Boston's Josh Beckett held Toronto to just three hits in seven innings, while teammate Mike Lowell went 4-for-4 at the plate with three doubles.

Also in the American League, the Cleveland Indians defeated the Seattle Mariners 9-5, their sixth victory in seven games, and their best season start since 2002. The Baltimore Orioles beat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 8-4; the Minnesota Twins scored a 7-6 victory over the Oakland A's and the Los Angeles Angels rallied in the ninth inning in their 5-4 win over the Texas Rangers.
