NBA: Pacers Edge Nets in Game 1 of Playoff Series

update

The Indiana Pacers have surprised the New Jersey Nets, 90-88, in the first game of their National Basketball Association playoff series.

A pair of free throws by former Nets guard Anthony Johnson with one second remaining lifted the visiting Pacers.

The higher-seeded home teams won the other three opening playoff games Sunday.

Dallas star Dirk Nowitzki scored 31 points to lead the Mavericks to a 103-93 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies.

The top-seeded Detroit Pistons used a balanced attack to crush the Milwaukee Bucks, 92-74.

The Phoenix Suns got by the Los Angeles Lakers, 107-102. Tim Thomas led the Suns with 22 points and a career playoff-high 15 points. Thomas was signed by Phoenix early last month after he was released by Chicago. The Bulls did not allow Thomas to play most of the season, complaining he had a bad attitude.

Chicago resumes its playoff series Monday in Miami, trailing the Heat after one game in the best-of-seven series. The only other NBA contest Monday has the Denver Nuggets at the Los Angeles Clippers.
