MLB: Rodriguez Helps Yankees Win Over Devil Rays


Alex Rodriguez snapped a hitting slump with an RBI (runs batted in) single in the 10th inning to help the New York Yankees earn a 4-2 win over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays Wednesday in Major League Baseball.

Tampa Bay was leading 2-0 in seventh inning when the Yankees tied the game with runs by Jorge Posada and Miguel Cairo. After Rodriguez drove home Johnny Damon in the 10th, Hideki Matsui followed with a game-winning RBI single. New York's Mariano Rivera got his fifth save in six opportunities.

Elsewhere in the American League, Detroit, Minnesota, Toronto, Texas, Chicago, and Cleveland were the victors. In the National League, the winners included San Francisco, New York, Philadelphia, Houston, Colorado, Florida, Arizona, and San Diego.

The Detroit Tigers beat the Los Angeles Angels 2-1 for their sixth straight win. The Minnesota Twins beat the Kansas City Royals 6-1, as Kansas City notched its 12 consecutive road loss, leaving them one shy of the record for most road losses at the start of a season.

The Toronto Blue Jays defeated the slumping Boston Red Sox 7-6. Mark DeRosa hit a home run in the 12th inning to help the Texas Rangers beat the Baltimore Orioles 2-1. The Chicago White Sox took 11 innings to beat the Seattle Mariners 6-5, while the Cleveland Indians trounced the Oakland A's 14-3.

In the National League, the San Francisco Giants edged past the Milwaukee Brewers 2-0, as slugger Barry Bonds went hitless in four at-bats after he was hit in the head by a foul ball during pre-game batting practice. New York's Carlos Delgado homered in the 12th inning to lead the Mets to a 4-3 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Philadelphia Phillies downed the Atlanta Braves 5-4 to earn their fourth straight victory. Pitcher Roy Oswalt gave up just four hits in eight innings to help the Houston Astros defeat the Saint Louis Cardinals 5-4. The Colorado Rockies beat the Cincinnati Reds 3-0 to end a two-game losing streak.

The Florida Marlins beat the Washington Nationals 6-5. The Arizona Diamondbacks handed pitcher Greg Maddux his first loss of the season in their 5-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs. And the San Diego Padres routed the Los Angeles Dodgers 11-5.
