Verdict Due Monday in Zuma Rape Trial

update

A South African judge is expected to hand down the verdict Monday in a high-profile rape trial involving former deputy president Jacob Zuma.

Zuma is accused of raping a 31-year-old, HIV-positive woman who is a longtime family friend. He claims the sex was consensual.

The trial has drawn widespread interest across South Africa, focusing attention on the country's high incidence of rape and HIV infection. Monday's verdict is scheduled to be broadcast live on television.

Sunday, the 64-year-old Zuma attended a fundraising concert in the Johannesburg suburb of Soweto, where he thanked thousands of audience members for their support. The proceeds from the concert went to his legal fund.

Zuma was once considered a strong contender to succeed President Thabo Mbeki, who fired him because of corruption-related accusations last year.

Zuma is due to stand trial on corruption charges in July.
