Czech Republic's Civic Democrats To Try to Form Government

The conservative Civic Democrats will likely take the first steps towards forming a center-right government Monday after an inconclusive election in the Czech Republic.

Party leader Mirek Topolanek is expected to meet with President Vaclav Klaus to talk about forming a government. Topolanek is also expected to begin negotiations with other political parties.

The Civic Democrats emerged from voting Friday and Saturday with the largest share of the vote, about 35 percent.

But the party and its two likely partners, the Greens and Christian Democrats have only 100 seats in the 200-member lower house, the same as the ruling coalition of Social Democrats and communists.
