In Guinea, students have clashed with security forces for a second day, as a nationwide strike continues to shut down most of the country.
Local media report that student demonstrators set up roadblocks on the outskirts of the capital, Conakry Tuesday. The students hurled stones at security forces, who tried to disperse them with tear gas.
At least ten people were killed on Monday in the capital and two other towns when soldiers fired on students protesting the suspension of exams.
The government issued a statement Tuesday saying the end-of-year exams would be held at a later date.
The government has accused opposition parties of orchestrating and manipulating the protests.
The nationwide strike in Guinea is in its sixth day. The country's largest unions are demanding higher salaries for government workers, and lower prices for rice and fuel.
This is the second violent nationwide strike in Guinea this year. The strikes and clashes have raised fears of increasing instability in the west African nation.
Guinea's President Lansana Conte is in his 70s, suffers from diabetes, and has no apparent successor.
