England and Ecuador have joined host country Germany in reaching the round of 16 at the World Cup football tournament in Germany while Sweden picked up a much needed win.
Ecuador defeated Costa Rica, 3-0, in a Group A match in Hamburg. The South Americans got goals from Carlos Tenorio at the eighth minute, Agustin Delgado (54th minute) and Ivan Kaviedes (92nd minute). The result eliminated Costa Rica and Poland from the World Cup.
Later in a Group B match, England scored a 2-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago in Nuremberg. Peter Crouch and Steven Gerrard scored late in the game, which was scoreless until Crouch's goal in the 83rd minute. Gerrard added the second score in injury time. The win gives England six points from two matches and a berth in the second round.
In Berlin, Fredrik Ljungberg scored with a header in the 89th minute to give Sweden a 1-0 victory over Paraguay, which has now lost twice in Group B. Sweden dominated the game but felt frustrated after playing Trinidad and Tobago to a scoreless (0-0) draw.
