Football: Portugal Qualifies for 2nd Round of World Cup


Portugal's national football (soccer) team has qualified for the second round of the World Cup tournament in Germany thanks to a 2-0 win over Iran.

In a group-D match in Frankfurt, Deco scored in the 63rd minute and Cristiano Ronaldo added the second goal on an 80th minute penalty kick.

The result gives Portugal six points from two matches in Group-D. Mexico is in second place with four points and plays Portugal in Gelsenkirchen next Wednesday. Iran - with no points - is eliminated after just two games.

Meanwhile in Colgone, Ghana defeated the Czech Republic, 2-0, in a Group-E match. Gyan Asamoah scored for Ghana in the second minute, the fastest any African player has scored in the World Cup. Sulley Muntari added the second goal in the 82nd minute.

In a hard-fought match in Kaiserslautern, the United States and Italy played to a 1-1 draw. Alberto Gilardino scored for Italy and Cristian Zaccardo scored an own goal to give the Americans the draw.

Three red cards were handed out in this match - two for the United States and one for Italy. The Americans finished the match with only nine men on the field against Italy's 10.

Portugal joins host country Germany, Ecuador, the Netherlands, Argentina and England in qualifying for the second round.
