update

The United States has offered its condolences to the family of Nicaraguan presidential candidate Herty Lewites, who died Sunday in Managua.

In a statement released Monday, the U.S. State Department said Lewites was a committed public servant and leader who was working for a better future for the people of Nicaragua.

A spokesman for Lewites' political party, the Sandinista Renovation Movement, said he died of a heart attack in a Managua hospital.

Lewites was a former mayor of Managua. Recent polls showed him running in third place for Nicaragua's November 5 presidential election.
