Three seeded players have been knocked out of the first round of play at the Swedish Open tennis tournament in Bastad.
No. 3 Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic, sixth-seeded Thomas Johansson of Sweden and No. 7 Guillermo Coria of Argentina all lost Tuesday.
Spain's Nicolas Almagro beat Berdych, 6-2, 7-6, while Luis Horna of Peru topped Johansson, 6-4, 6-2, and Argentine countryman Jose Acasuso eliminated Coria, 2-6, 6-2, 7-5.
Fourth-seeded Jarkko Nieminen of Finland managed to make it to the second round along with number-five David Ferrer of Spain. Nieminen needed three sets to defeat Juan Ignacio Chela of Argentina, 6-4, 5-7, 6-1, while Ferrer dispatched Mohammed Al Ghareeb of Kuwait, 6-4, 6-4.
Czech player Lukas Dlouhy, Evgeny Korolev and Yuri Schukin of Russia, Nicolas Massu of Chile and Agustin Calleri of Argentina also advanced. Alexander Waske of Germany led Sweden's Jonas Bjorkman, 6-4, 4-6, 4-2 when their match was suspended by rain.
