India Tests Short-Range Surface-to-Air Missile

update

India has test-fired a short-range surface-to-air missile, part of a series of recent tests of different missile types.

Sunday's launch was conducted at the country's main testing center at Chandipur in the eastern coastal state of Orissa.

The solid fuel-propelled missile, known as Trishul, is designed to target aircraft and sea-skimming missiles. It has a range of nine kilometers. India also tested the system in early December.

Officials say the Trishul is the Indian version of the anti-missile Patriot system built by U.S.-based Raytheon.

India is developing the Trishul for use by its army, navy and air force.
