Bomb Blast Near Sunni Mosque in Baghdad Kills 4 People

update

Iraqi police say a bomb blast near a Sunni Mosque in Baghdad has killed four people and wounded at least six others.

The attack during Friday prayers comes as the Iraqi government and U.S.-led coalition seek to curb increasing sectarian violence.

Thursday, rocket and mortar attacks killed at least 31 people and wounded more than 115 others in central Baghdad.

The U.S Defense Department announced Thursday that several thousand soldiers will stay in Iraq for up to four months beyond their one-year assignment, which was about to end.

This week, President Bush promised visiting Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki that the U.S will provide more troops to try to stem the escalating violence in Baghdad.

Meanwhile, the U.S. military said Friday Iraqi troops and coalition soldiers killed 33 terrorists in a daylong battle last Sunday in the town of Musayyib. The statement did not report any casualties among the Iraqi and coalition soldiers.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
