RWF: China Arrests Journalist for Internet Articles on Crackdown on Christians

Reporters Without Borders says Chinese authorities have arrested a journalist for posting reports on the Internet about government repression of Christians.

The France-based organization said Saturday that Zan Aizong was arrested Friday in China's eastern province of Zhejian.

The organization said Zan had posted a report early this month on various overseas Web sites detailing the arrests of around 50 Protestants demonstrating against the destruction of a church in late July.

Zan, who worked for the local Haiyang Bao newspaper, posted another report on the Internet two days later about authorities' warnings to stop posting the material.

Reporters Without Borders says he was arrested soon after, and that police have searched his home and seized personal documents.

Rights organizations and several countries, including the United States, have repeatedly criticized China for its control and filtering of information available on the Internet.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
