British Soldier Killed in Accident in Afghanistan

The British military says one of its soldiers serving with NATO-led forces in Afghanistan has died in a vehicle accident in southern Helmand province.

A NATO statement said Saturday's accident happened while the vehicle was undergoing routine maintenance. It said no hostile action was involved.

On Friday, three U.S. soldiers were killed in a battle with Taleban insurgents in northeastern Nuristan province.

A U.S. military spokesman, Colonel Tom Collins, said three other American soldiers and one Afghan were wounded in the assault. He did not say whether the militants suffered any casualties.

Also on Friday, the NATO-led force said a suicide bomber plowed his bomb-laden car into a convoy in southern Kandahar province, killing a NATO soldier.

Earlier, the U.S. military said American and Afghan troops killed three al-Qaida fighters during a raid in southeastern Afghanistan.

Officials say three suspects also were detained during the operation in Khost province. They say the raid was aimed at an al-Qaida member linked to roadside bomb attacks in the region.

More than 1,000 people have been killed in violence in Afghanistan this year, the highest number since the Taleban were ousted from power by U.S.-led forces in late 2001.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
