update

PepsiCo, the U.S. company that markets Pepsi and other beverages, has selected a woman born in India to be its next chief executive officer.

Indra Nooyi will assume control of the company on Oct. 1, PepsiCo announced Monday.

Nooyi was born in Madras and earned her undergraduate and master's degrees in India. She is also a graduate of the Yale School of Management in the United States.

The business magazine Forbes included Nooyi in a list of the 100 most powerful women in the United States last year. She has worked for PepsiCo for the past 12 years, most recently as the company's chief financial officer.

The value of the company's stock rose slightly after her promotion was announced.
