Iranian President to Visit Venezuela

update

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez says his Iranian counterpart, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, will visit Venezuela this month.

Mr. Chavez says President Ahmadinejad will arrive in Caracas within the next two weeks.

The Venezuelan leader made the fifth trip of his presidency to Iran in July. President Ahmadinejad presented Mr. Chavez with a medal for supporting Tehran in its nuclear dispute with Western nations, including the United States and European Union.

Those countries are urging the United Nations to impose sanctions against Iran for its uranium enrichment program.

The United States and European Union accuse Iran of trying to develop nuclear weapons. Tehran says its nuclear program is for civilian energy production purposes only.

Venezuela and Iran are major oil producers and members of the powerful OPEC oil cartel.

President Chavez has made a point of signing political and energy deals across the world in an effort to counterbalance what he denounces as U.S. imperialism and mis-use of power.
