Panda, Mana, Shakira Big Winners at 2006 MTV Latin American Music Awards

The Mexican rock band Panda has won three awards at the annual MTV Latin American Music Awards in Mexico City.

The group took home awards Thursday for best band, best alternative artist and newcomer of the year. Mexican rockers Mana won video of the year for the song "Labios Compartidos," and received a special award honoring the group's two decades in the music business.

Mexican singer and accordion player Julieta Venegas, who came to the show with six nominations, earned best performer honors. Sultry Colombian singer Shakira won song of the year for "Hips Don't Lie."

This was the first time the ceremonies were held outside the United States. Last year's awards show was scheduled to be held at a Caribbean resort, but was canceled due to Hurricane Wilma.
