South African Music Star Lebo Mathosa Dies in Car Crash

update

Popular South African singer and actor Lebo Mathosa has died in a car crash at the age of 29.

Mathosa's manager says her driver apparently lost control of her car outside of Johannesburg early Monday.

Mathosa was known for combining African musical genres such as Kwaito with jazz and rhythm and blues.

She rose to fame as a teenager in 1994 with the Kwaito band Boom Shaka. Mathosa released her first solo album, Dream, in 2001 and another, called Drama Queen, in 2004. The albums won numerous South African Music Awards and African MTV Awards.

Mathosa also acted in several South African television series and in a feature film called Soldiers of the Rock that played at international film festivals.

South Africa's Minister of Arts and Culture, Pallo Jordan, issued a tribute to Mathosa Monday, calling her the "outstanding vocal leader of her generation."
