UEFA Fines Croatia, England

The European Football Union, UEFA, has fined England and Croatia for fan trouble at a European Championship qualifying match in Zagreb last month.

Before the October 11 game, won by England, 2-0, English fans tried to get into the stadium but Croatian security closed the gates and fans clashed with riot police.

UEFA fined the Croatian Football Federation $40,000 while the English were handed an $8,000 fine. UEFA's control and disciplinary body fined Croatia for what it called a serious lack of organization. England was fined for fans throwing objects and lighting flares.

In a separate action, UEFA banned German Under-21 striker Aaron Hunt for two international matches for making racist comments at a European Championship qualifier last month. The Werder Bremen striker denied making racist remarks against England's Micah Richards and Anton Ferdinand, who are black, at an under-21 playoff match October 10.
