Rangers Becomes 1st Club to Reach 3rd Round of UEFA Cup

The Scottish football club Rangers has become the first club to reach the third round of the UEFA Cup tournament thanks to a 2-2 draw with Auxerre of France.

Ireneusz Jelen scored for Auxerre in the 31st minute and Nacho Novo added the first goal for Rangers in the 62nd minute. Daniel Niculae put the French club ahead in the 75th minute and Kris Boyd scored the tying goal in the 84th minute.

In other early matches, Ajax Amsterdam of the Netherlands played Sparta Prague to a scoreless draw. Ajax was reduced to 10 men when defender Urby Emanuelson was sent off for two yellow cards in the 39th minute.

Italy's Palermo lost its second straight UEFA Cup match 3-0 at Fenerbache of Turkey. In Group-C, Slovan Liberec of the Czech Republic earned its first win with a 4-1 win over Grasshoppers Zurich of Switzerland.

Maccabi Haifa of Israel defeated Partizan, 1-0, while Rapid Bucharest played Mlada Boleslav to a 1-1 draw in Bucharest.
