Preliminary Results Show Incumbent President Wins Madagascar Election

Early results from Madagascar's presidential election show the incumbent, Marc Ravalomanana, has won re-election.

The interior ministry Saturday said provisional results indicate that Mr. Ravalomanana received 55 percent of the vote.

Officials say returns have been counted from at least 96 percent of polling stations.

The president's lead has declined in recent days. At one point, preliminary results showed he had won about 70 percent of the vote.

Election observers reported relatively high turnout for last week's poll. Observers criticized some parts of the voting process, but they said the balloting was orderly.

Observers complained that some candidates were excluded from running, and - as required by Madagascar law - candidates had to supply their own ballots.
