Tennis: French Open Organizers to Award Equal Prize Money to Men, Women

update

Organizers of this year's French Open tennis tournament have announced they will award equal prize money to all men and women, thus falling into line with the other three major tournaments.

The French Tennis Federation announced the move Friday. It deepens last year's decision to pay the men's and women's champions the same money, extending the parity to all players.

Equalizing the pay will raise the total purse to more than $20 million, a 7.2 percent increase over last year. This year's French Open champion will receive $1.33 million, a record for the Paris tournament.

Last month, Wimbledon decided to award equal prize money to all players, leaving the French tournament as the only one that did not have parity. The Australian and U.S. Open tournaments had previously decided to offer participants equal prize money. This year's French Open starts May 27 in Paris.
