Tennessee has ended a nine-year women's college basketball championship drought by defeating Rutgers, 59-46, in Cleveland, Ohio.
Candace Parker led Tennessee with 17 points Tuesday. Parker was supported by a balanced scoring attack from three of her less heralded teammates - Shannon Bobbit (13) Sidney Spencer (11) and Alberta Auguste (10).
Kia Vaughn was the game's leading scorer. She was the only Rutgers player in double figures with 20 points and 10 rebounds. But Rutgers made too many mistakes and could not completely overcome a 16-point deficit from earlier in the game.
The victory gives Tennessee and coach Pat Summitt seven titles, and their first since 1998. Summitt has 947 career victories, the most in either men's or women's college basketball.
