Manchester United Reaches Champions League Semifinals

Manchester United has crushed the visiting Italian club AS Roma, 7-1, to reach the semifinal round of the Champions League football tournament.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Michael Carrick scored two goals each Tuesday to lead Manchester United, which advanced 8-3 on aggregate. Alan Smith, Wayne Rooney and Patrice Evra also scored for United, while Daniele De Rossi scored for Roma.

Chelsea of England also advanced to the semifinals, coming back from one goal down to edge Valencia of Spain, 2-1. That gave Chelsea a 3-2 victory. Michael Essien scored the game winner in injury time.

Fans fought with police outside the Old Trafford stadium before Manchester United's game, despite the presence of extra police deployed after three United supporters were stabbed in violence last week outside Roma's stadium.

On Wednesday, Bayern Munich of Germany hosts AC Milan of Italy following a 2-2 draw in the first leg, while PSV Eindhoven of the Netherlands is in trouble as it visits England's Liverpool after a 3-0 loss in the opening leg.
