Lawyer For Zimbabwe Opposition Says Prisoners Denied Medical Care

A crackdown on the political opposition by Zimbabwean authorities continued as a spokesman for the Movement for Democratic Change faction of Morgan Tsvangirai in eastern Manicaland Province was arrested, MDC sources said Tuesday.

MDC sources said Manicaland official Pishai Muchauray was arrested Monday in Mutare, the provincial capital, and brought to Harare Central Police Station.

Faction sources said they had received a report that Muchauray was beaten multiple times by Zimbabwe police following his arrest.

Elsewhere, a lawyer for the Tsvangirai faction said party organizing secretary Morgan Komichi and member Phillip Mabika, held by Harare police for two weeks now and also said to have been beaten while in custody, said they had been denied medical care.

Attorney Alec Muchadehama said he may have to file an urgent application to the high court to gain access to his clients and arrange for them to receive medical care.

Muchadahama gave reporter Patience Rusere an update on his clients' plight.
