World number one men's tennis player Roger Federer of Switzerland has tied the Grand Slam record for most consecutive sets won in the modern Open era.
Federer pushed his streak to 35 Sunday at the French Open in Paris by beating Russian Mikhail Youzhny, 7-6, 6-4, 6-4. Federer also matched another Open-era Grand Slam mark with 11 straight-set victories in a row as he reached the quarterfinal round. Both marks had stood since for 23 years, set by American John McEnroe during Wimbledon and the U.S. Open in 1984.
Federer is trying to win his fourth consecutive major title and complete a career Grand Slam with his first French Open title. He next plays Spaniard Tommy Robredo, who was a 6-2, 7-5, 6-1 winner over Filippo Volandri of Italy.
Also reaching the quarterfinal is Nikolay Davydenko. The fourth-seeded Russia defeated David Nalbandian of Argentina, 6-3, 7-6, 3-6, 7-6. Guillermo Canas of Argentina was a 6-0, 6-4, 6-2 winner over countryman Juan Monaco.
Among the women, eighth-seeded Serena Williams of the United States downed Russian 10th seed Dinara Safina, 6-2, 6-3. Sixth-seeded Czech Nicole Vaidisova ousted Tathiana Garbin of Italy, 6-3, 6-1.
Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova, seeded third, topped Shahar Peer of Israel, 6-4, 6-3. Top seeded Justine Henin of Belgium defeated Sybille Bammer of Austria, 6-2, 6-4. Second-seeded Russian Maria Sharapova beat Patty Schnyder of Switzerland, 3-6, 6-4, 9-7.
Serb Jelena Jankovic, seeded fourth, breezed past French opponent Marion Bartoli, 6-1, 6-1. Seventh-seeded Ana Ivanovic got past Spaniard Anabel Medina Garrigues, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Anna Chakvetadze of Russia, the tournament's ninth seed, defeated Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic, 6-4, 0-6, 6-2.
