Third Jewel of Horse Racing's Triple Crown Won by 'Rags to Riches'

The filly "Rags to Riches" has beaten Preakness winner "Curlin" to take the 139th Belmont Stakes, the third jewel of U.S. horse racing's Triple Crown.

With only seven horses in the field, "Rags to Riches", with Johnny Velazquez aboard, beat "Curlin" by a neck to take the 2.41 kilometer race. "Tiago" was third.

The win makes "Rags to Riches" the first female horse to win the Belmont since "Tanya" in 1905. It is also the first win for trainer Todd Pletcher, who until Saturday was 0-for-28 in Triple Crown races.

No horse has won all three races, the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness, and the Belmont Stakes, since "Affirmed" in 1978.
