The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) says two suspects in the British attempted car bombings case contacted a U.S. agency that certifies foreign doctors about practicing medicine in the United States.
FBI officials Friday identified one of the suspects as Mohammed Asha, 26, a Jordanian doctor arrested in Britain Sunday. Officials did not release the identity of the second person.
The FBI said Asha contacted the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates in Philadelphia sometime within the last year. But officials said he did not go through with the process, and did not take the test for foreign medical graduate students.
The commission evaluates foreign-trained doctors to ensure they have the necessary skills to practice or enter medical residencies in the United States.
The American Medical Association estimates that a quarter of all doctors in the United States are foreign born.
