Filippo Pozzato Wins 5th Stage of Tour de France


Italian cyclist Filippo Pozzato is the winner of the fifth stage of the Tour de France, while Swiss rider Fabian Cancellara held on to the leader's yellow jersey for the sixth straight day.

Pozzato won a pack sprint at the end of the 182-kilometer trek, from the Burgundy town of Chablis to Autun, finishing Thursday in 4:39:01. Oscar Freire of Spain was second and Daniele Bennati of Italy was third. The first 74 riders were all credited with the same time.

Pre-race favorite Alexandre Vinokourov lost time in a crash with 25 kilometers to go. He said his chain came off. The Kazakh rider lost 1:20 after coming into the stage in 12th place, trailing Cancellara by 50 seconds.

Cancellara's overall lead is 33 seconds ahead of German Andreas Kloden, and 35 seconds ahead of Pozzato.

American George Hincapie with the Discovery Channel team is in fifth place, 43 seconds off the pace.
