Singer R. Kelly Goes On Trial for Child Pornography

R. Kelly will go on trial for child pornography on September 17, five years after charges first surfaced against the Grammy-winning rhythm and blues star.

Prosecutors say 40-year-old Robert Kelly faces up to 15 years in jail if convicted of videotaping himself having sex with a girl who may have been as young as 13.

Defense attorneys dispute both her age and Kelly's presence on the tape. The underground videotape has been widely circulated.

Kelly pleaded not guilty to the charges, and has over the past five years released hit songs, gone on tours, and released a popular DVD of his so-called "hip-hopera," Trapped In The Closet.

Cook County, Illinois Judge Vincent Gaughan said jury selection will begin September 17. The trial was delayed in part by arguments over when the tape was made. The judge also sustained broken bones in a fall, necessitating recuperation time.
