Georgian lawmakers have confirmed Lado Gurgenidze as the country's new prime minister.
President Mikhail Saakashvili nominated the banker last week in an effort to resolve the crisis that shook the country earlier this month.
Addressing lawmakers before the vote, Mr. Gurgenidze stressed the importance of stability in the country and pledged to pursue reforms.
The crisis began about three weeks ago as opposition activists launched six days of mass protests, accusing the president of corruption and demanding that he resign.
Mr. Saakashvili imposed a state of emergency after demonstrators clashed with police. He later lifted the measures announcing plans for new presidential elections January fifth.
The opposition has called for mass demonstrations Sunday to protest the continued closure of a pro-opposition television station. Critics say there can be no free and fair elections unless Imedi television is allowed to resume broadcasts.
President Saakashvili has accused Russia of stirring up trouble in Georgia and prompting the opposition protests. Russia has denied the charges.
