Officials in Burundi say five people have been detained for suspected involvement in the shooting death this week of a French aid worker.
An official with the ministry of communication said Wednesday the detainees are being questioned about their alleged role. He promised that the perpetrators of the crime would be punished.
The French aid worker was killed Monday and a colleague of hers seriously wounded when unidentified gunman fired at their company car in the eastern Ruyigi region. The women worked for the aid group Action Against Hunger.
Police say four of the suspects were former employees of local aid groups who were driven out of their jobs.
Tuesday, French President Nicolas Sarkozy issued a statement condemning the shooting. He called on authorities in Burundi to do everything possible to determine who is responsible for the attack.
