Joe Gibbs has resigned as coach and team president of the National Football League's Washington Redskins.
Gibbs made the announcement Tuesday, three days after the Redskins lost in the 1st round of the playoffs to the Seattle Seahawks. The Redskins said in a statement that Gibbs will remain part of the Redskins family and serve as a special adviser to team owner Dan Snyder.
Washington will begin a search for a new coach immediately. Among the candidates are two former head coaches on Gibbs's staff, Gregg Williams and Al Saunders.
The 67-year-old Gibbs had one year remaining on his contract in his second stint with the Redskins. During his first tenure with Washington from 1981 to 1992 he won three Super Bowl championships. He is already in the NFL Hall of Fame.
Gibbs's resignation comes after one of the best coaching performances of his career. His leadership helped the Redskins focus after the murder of one of their defensive stars, Sean Taylor, on November 27th. Washington won its final four regular season games after Taylor's funeral to claim a playoff berth.
