Sudanese authorities believe they have found the body of a French European Union peacekeeper who disappeared Monday after a clash with Sudanese forces.
The EU released a statement Wednesday saying arrangements are being made to formally identify and recover the remains from Sudanese authorities.
The missing soldier was part of a European Union force in eastern Chad that is protecting refugees from Sudan's Darfur region.
French officials say the soldier accidentally crossed the border from Chad into Sudan while on a reconnaissance patrol with another French peacekeeper.
French authorities say the two peacekeepers came upon Sudanese forces and identified themselves before Sudanese soldiers opened fire.
Authorities say one French peacekeeper collapsed in his vehicle and the other soldier was wounded but managed to get away and rejoin EU forces.
French troops later returned to search for the missing soldier and exchanged fire with Sudanese soldiers.
On Wednesday, France asked Sudan for help in finding the missing peacekeeper.
Sudan says it is taking measures to ensure such incidents do not happen again.
The EU has authorized a force of 3,700 soldiers to protect camps in eastern Chad housing more than 230,000 Sudanese refugees.
The refugees fled fighting between rebels and government forces in Darfur that has seen more than 200,000 people killed since 2003.
