Sweden has announced it is cutting aid to Rwanda following a United Nations report indicating the country is supporting Tutsi rebels in their fight against the government in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
In a statement Wednesday, the Swedish government said it is taking the report seriously and has stopped payment on the more than $10 million in aid it was scheduled to send to Rwanda.
Last week, the report prompted the Netherlands to withhold more than $4 million in funding to the country.
The U.N. report accuses the Rwandan government of supporting Tutsi soldiers loyal to renegade General Laurent Nkunda in his fight with DRC government soldiers and pro-government militias.
Rwandan President Paul Kagame has dismissed the U.N. report and said the people of Rwanda will just have to learn to live without the foreign funding.
Nkunda says his troops are protecting Tutsi communities against attacks by Congo's military, militias and Hutu extremists responsible for the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, but now in eastern Congo.
