Madonna Appears in Malawi Court in Adoption Bid

U.S. pop singer Madonna has appeared in court in Malawi, seeking to adopt a second child from the country.

Authorities said Monday that Madonna hopes to adopt a four-year-old girl from the southern African nation.

The 50-year-old mother of three finalized her adoption of a boy, David Banda, from Malawi last year.

In that adoption, both Madonna and Malawi's government were criticized for skirting the country's legal restrictions on adoptions by non-residents.

The singer has ties to Malawi. She has set up the Raising Malawi charity, which provides support to vulnerable children.

Madonna is single, following her divorce from British film director Guy Ritchie last year.

Officials say at least half a million children in Malawi have been orphaned by AIDS.

Some information for this report was provided by AP and Reuters.
