Zimbabwe's National Constitutional Assembly, a leading civic group, has convened what it calls a "people's convention" on Monday aiming to mobilize Zimbabweans against the troubled parliamentary-led process for overhauling the country's constitution.
Backed by the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions, the Zimbabwe National Students Union and other elements of civil society, the NCA will encourage the electorate to reject any constitution drafted under the supervision of a parliamentary select committee.
The group has criticized an official process controlled by politicians, saying the country needs a "people-driven" constitution drafted by a special commission representing all sectors.
The first day of a conference this week of 3,500 delegates to the official revision mechanism was disrupted by militants of the ZANU-PF party of President Robert Mugabe.
National Constitutional Assembly Chairman Lovemore Madhuku told reporter Patience Rusere of VOA's Studio 7 for Zimbabwe that his group is not proposing a parallel process but a campaign to urge the electorate to reject the product of the official process.
